Lighting
The Wŷ Lamp
Slipcast porcelain with hand-applied texture elements on a hardwood base.
The Wŷ lamp is my first light. This piece was inspired by my home of Snowdonia in Wales - wŷ being the Welsh translation for egg. During the pandemic lockdowns I spent a lot of time outside and rediscovered my local area through walking. I had always appreciated the beauty of the landscape, but on my walks I found a different perspective of my area and fell in love with its rugged beauty. I wanted to pay homage to that rediscovery by creating a piece that, like the landscape, is delicate and beautiful from a distance, but when you encounter it more closely you discover that it is actually quite rough and rugged. The lamp's scaly texture - inspired by tree bark - together with the warmth from the mood light encourage you to touch the piece.
Tableware
Denmark teapot
Slipcast glazed bone china
The Denmark teapot is part of a series of designs for a complete bone china teaset. During a trip to Copenhagen, I was inspired by postmodern shapes I saw there at an exhibition showcasing the Memphis design style. This postmodern movement often referenced the art deco shapes that can also be seen in early 20th century ceramics.
The Totems Collection
Yellow Submarine
Slipcast earthenware, hand-textured and glazed.
Yellow Submarine was my final year collection at university. I was inspired by postmodernism and playfulness with shape and colour. I wanted to create an interactive and interchangeable selection of pieces that would provide a creative outlet for the owner of the pieces, as a response to the restrictions of pandemic lockdowns.
Sgt Pepper, the first of the images above, and Jeremy Hillary Boob Ph.D, the second image above, are both standalone assemblages of the modular pieces that make up the Yellow Submarine collection. I named these pieces once I had completed them. As a child one of my favourite films was the animated 1968 Beatles film Yellow Submarine, and the names of characters in the film popped into my head. As my pieces were heavily inspired by postmodernism and playfulness it made sense to name them after the fantastical animated film that reminded me so much of my childhood.
Delphinium, Artichoke, Yarrow
Slipcast earthenware, hand-textured and glazed.
Three pieces inspired by the restrictions on our daily lives during the pandemic lockdowns. I wanted to create tactile items that would tempt you to touch them, through their texture, shape and colour. These vessels can also be combined with the pieces from the Yellow Submarine collection - my aim is to encourage play and give the individual creative control over how they would like to present the pieces.
Bonbons - Lemon, Orange, Apple, Blackcurrant
Slipcast glazed earthenware.
These vessels are simply that; vessels. Drinkware, vases, or aesthetic pieces, it is up to the individual to decide how to use them. The Bonbons can be stacked vertically or may also be combined with elements from the whole Totems collection.
